NEW YORK, NY (November 1, 2018) — Today, Lincoln Center has announced the 20th season of American Songbook, celebrating the ever-expanding American musical canon from January 30 to March 4, 2019. This year’s 15-concert series includes legendary songwriters, contemporary storytellers and interpreters of song, and musical projects by multitalented performers pushing the boundaries of pop, alternative, soul, folk, musical theater, jazz, and more.

 

Beginning the season in true Broadway spirit is fan favorite Tony Yazbeck (On the Town), taking audiences on a personal and professional journey with classic show tunes, pop hits, and graceful, energetic dance numbers. The classically trained and effortlessly charming Jose Llana (The King and I) returns to American Songbook four years after his sold-out appearance at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse; and Broadway royalty Christine Ebersole brings her unforgettable voice and award-winning talent to Alice Tully Hall with a specially created show, directed by Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).

 

Some of music’s most influential songwriters are centerpieces throughout the season, including the legendary Desmond Child. The multi-platinum songwriter, with more than eighty Top 40 songs to his name, recreates his most beloved hits, from ’80s rock classics to Latin crossover phenomena. Martha Plimpton: All the Presidents Mann uses the material of the incredible singer-songwriter Aimee Mann as a platform for witty political commentary dedicated to a selection of U.S. presidents.

 

Contemporary, experimental artists come to American Songbook combining sensitive lyrics with unconventional, cross-genre sounds, including St. Vincent. The enigmatic indie-rock star has amassed a cult following thanks to her high-energy, conceptual art-rock and returns to Lincoln Center with a vulnerable, stripped-down, and unadorned Valentine’s Day performance accompanied only by pianist Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. Doveman). St. Vincent’s vocal prowess and masterful songcraft take centerstage in simple, yet striking, reinterpretations of her 2017 album during this intimate night. Rostam—singer, multi-instrumentalist, and former Vampire Weekend songwriter and cofounder—made his mark as a solo act with a fusion of electronic, pop, and indie sounds on his debut album Half-Light. Busy at work on his much anticipated follow up, Rostam shares new material with an intimate crowd, including his latest single, In a River. Then, the gorgeous instrumental melodies, dynamic beats, and reflective lyrics of Son Lux come to NYC for the first time since the release of the newly minted trio’s EP, Yesterday’s Wake, in a deeply personal set.

 

Guatemalan-born folk singer Gaby Moreno uses her gift for writing bluesy bilingual anthems to touch listeners with captivating stories of love, loss, and the immigrant experience. With a soon-to-be-released album on the horizon, Moreno pulls from beloved and new material for a special evening of American Songbook. Fellow Guatemalan, actor-musician Oscar Isaac—known for roles in indie classics and blockbuster films alike—displays his authentic, soulful voice and musicality in this intimate setting.

 

Using her phenomenal voice to transcend genres, iconic opera star Joyce DiDonato brings together internationally treasured musicians for Songplay, a boundless celebration of the art of song (sharing the same name as her upcoming album). Outspoken activist and performer Jenifer Lewis is well known for her unvarnished point of view and roles in countless iconic television shows, movies, and stage productions, including What’s Love Got to Do With It, Broadway’s Hairspray, and the Emmy-nominated Black-ish. This rare, solo performance highlights Lewis’s powerful voice, brilliant wit, and decades of cherished memories as the “mother of black Hollywood.”

 

Nancy And Beth, starring musical kindred spirits Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and Stephanie Hunt (Friday Night Lights, Californication), treat audiences to a punk-inspired vaudeville act, with everything from jazz standards to rap anthems, paired with flawless dance numbers and beautiful close harmonies. Recalling the intimacy of 1930s live radio, Rachael & Vilray (Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive and solo artist Vilray) let their voices transport listeners to a golden age of music, when simple arrangements showcased the incredible talent and artistry of performers.

 

The rising South African jazz star and Fulbright Scholar Vuyo Sotashe performs a free show at the David Rubenstein Atrium after a long list of high-profile concerts and collaborations with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Michael Mwenso, Elio Villafranca, and others.

Two decades since the teenaged Jose Llana made his Broadway debut as Lun Tha in the 1996 revival of The King and I, the classically trained tenor has retained his boyish charm and “youthful bravado” (New York Times), now enhanced with the gravitas of a seasoned star. His standout performance as Ferdinand Marcos in the 2013 David Byrne and Fatboy Slim musical Here Lies Love, directed by Alex Timbers, earned Llana a host of rave reviews, along with a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical. As a recording artist, the “charismatic and then some” singer (Showbiz 411) has released two solo albums, Altitude and Jose—both best sellers in his native Philippines—and been featured on numerous cast albums. In 2015 Llana returned to his Broadway roots, taking over the role of the King of Siam in Bartlett Sher’s Tony Award–winning revival of The King and I at Lincoln Center Theater and its subsequent touring production. Four years after his sold-out American Songbook debut in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse, the “strapping lead” (Time Out New York) makes his much anticipated return to the series with a captivating performance in The Appel Room.

 

Rachael & Vilray

Incandescent singer Rachael Price and virtuosic whistler, guitarist, and singer Vilray met at New England Conservatory in the early 2000s. In the years since, the Brooklyn-based duo has forged a unique sound that recalls the close harmonies and down-home intimacy of live radio in the 1930s and ‘40s. With a mix of standards and originals, Rachael & Vilray have performed at venues around New York City and beyond, recently appearing at the 2018 Newport Folk Festival. In between their individual gigs—Vilray as a touring solo musician who recently opened for The Gipsy Kings, and Price as frontwoman of the soul-rock band Lake Street Dive—these two busy musicians have carved out space for this special project and its warm, simple arrangements that put the spotlight on their musicality and the old-fashioned art of a well-crafted song.

When Megan Mullally and Stephanie Hunt first met, the Earth inhaled sharply. Reality expanded and shuddered with delight. The local tree frogs stoppered their raucous ditty and have nary been heard from since. That blessed day saw the voluptuous becoming of self-described “punk-showbiz” band Nancy And Beth, the most magnificent duo to ever lay lung to a blues chord. A brace of bounty in the form of two young girls who are exactly the same age, Mullally (the scene-stealing Karen in Will & Grace) and Hunt (Friday Night Lights and Californication) have been hailed as “musical misfits” (NPR) and “as sharp as any revivalist act going today” (Los Angeles Times). Together with their band of mystics, jazz pastors, and Austin, Texas, Wild West tea-heads, Nancy And Beth tackle everything from Tin Pan Alley standards to George Jones country and Gucci Mane, with all songs choreographed by Mullally, who studied at the School of American Ballet and has performed in several Broadway musicals. Following the success of their self-titled debut album and two national tours—which included stops at the Newport Folk Festival, the Grand Ole Opry, and Café Carlyle—Nancy And Beth will gamely endeavor to meet, and even exceed, your entertainment quota via harmonies in song, hypnotic dancing, and spoken pleasantries on the jewel-like stage of The Appel Room.

 

St. Vincent

Since her emergence in 2007, Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, has consistently expanded and solidified her profile as one of the most beguiling and enigmatic presences in modern music. The Grammy Award–winning “smartest indie-rock star of her generation” (Rolling Stone) has achieved critical and commercial success, with albums topping the U.S. and U.K. Top 10 charts, and inclusion on year-end best lists by the New York Times and the Guardian. In the years since her 2012 American Songbook performance in The Allen Room—which included David Byrne as a guest artist—she and Byrne recorded the groundbreaking collaborative album Love This Giant, her 2014 album St. Vincent won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album, and last year’s Masseduction solidified her stature in the alt-rock stratosphere. For this season of American Songbook, St. Vincent will bring her new album—MassEducation—which features piano and vocal-only versions of songs from Masseducation—to life, accompanied by pianist Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. Jenifer Lewis

Jenifer Lewis’s current role as Dre’s outspoken mom Ruby Johnson on the Emmy-nominated series Black-ish is only the latest in a long line of standout performances by the multitalented singer, actress, and activist. Her previous credits include notable roles in films such as What’s Love Got to Do With It, The Preacher’s Wife, and Madea’s Family Reunion, television’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Broadway’s Hairspray, among others. As a singer, she has raised the roof as a solo artist in more than 200 concerts around the world. Using the power of her platform to speak out about social, political, and mental health issues, Lewis recently published an honest and poignant memoir, The Mother of Black Hollywood, about her personal journey to stardom, and she continues to connect with audiences old and new through her vibrant social media presence. Desmond Child

Since his days performing in Desmond Child and Rouge in 1970s New York City, singer-songwriter Desmond Child has achieved legendary music world status as a multi-platinum hitmaker. His songwriting credits read like a five-decade history of pop and rock music, including everything from Kiss’s “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” to Aerosmith’s “Dude Looks Like a Lady,” Cher’s “We All Sleep Alone,” and Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ la Vida Loca,” with over a hundred songs—including more than eighty Top 40 hits across virtually every genre in recorded music—along the way. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008 and cofounder, along with fellow Cuban-American composer Rudy Pérez, of the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame, Child recently joined the ranks of fellow musical innovators Sir Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Patti Smith, Carly Simon, and others when he received an ASCAP Founders Award for his “exceptional contributions to music.” As a member of ASCAP’s board, he is also an outspoken advocate for musicians and songwriters in the age of streaming music services. Stepping out from behind the scenes, Child takes the stage at the Appel Room for an evening of soulful interpretations that lend new depth and dimension to songs you think you know.

With a mesmerizing mix of Americana, soul, blues, and folk—what she has called “Spanglish folk-soul”— Guatemalan-born singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno navigates troubled waters with “hauntingly beautiful” (NPR) bilingual anthems about love, loss, and the immigrant experience. Starting with her 2009 debut album, Still the Unknown, Moreno has garnered comparisons to Édith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and Aretha Franklin. Following a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist in 2013 and the crossover success of her Grammy-nominated 2016 album Ilusión, Moreno teamed up with arranger-producer Van Dyke Parks on a passionate and timely cover of David Rudder’s single “The Immigrants,” released in July 2018 in response to events taking place at the U.S.–Mexico border. Son Lux

When composer, keyboardist, and vocalist Ryan Lott—who founded Son Lux in 2008—invited percussionist Ian Chang and guitarist Rafiq Bhatia to join his solo project, the band became much more than the sum of its parts. The trio announced its new sound with the release of the 2015 album Bones, an experimental soundtrack that posed universal questions about living in a complex world. In early 2018 they followed it up with the deeply personal Brighter Wounds, building on their “avant-pop” (Pitchfork) foundation “with gorgeous instrumental bursts that lift Lott’s vocals to a desperate breaking point” (Pitchfork) in an intimate examination of what it means to be human. Fresh off an extensive European tour, Son Lux brings their deeply personal set to The Appel Room for an evening of warm reflections on love and loss and a thoughtful mixture of fear and optimism about our individual and shared futures.

 

Oscar Isaac

From instant cult classics to Hollywood blockbusters, the incredibly versatile Oscar Isaac has shown his range on screen through starring roles in 2018’s Operation Finale; the Star Wars series’ The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi; the indie sci-fi thriller Ex Machina; and, in 2013, the lead in Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coen Brothers’ homage to the 1960s Greenwich Village folk music scene, for which he performed his character’s compositions live. New York City’s hometown hero Martha Plimpton wowed audiences with her 2010 American Songbook debut, the one-woman show Martha Plimpton Sings?. For her much anticipated return to the series, the beloved Emmy Award winner and three-time Tony Award nominee—together with musical director Dan Lipton—pays tribute to the genius of singer-songwriter Aimee Mann with a hand-picked set of favorite tunes, each thematically paired to devastatingly mordant effect with a different United States president. Accompanied by a quartet of stellar musicians from the worlds of Broadway and late-night television, Plimpton will also invite special guests to join her onstage for this hilariously heartbreaking triptych through the landscape of love and loss and electoral misjudgment.

 

Joyce DiDonato: Songplay

Having mastered the bel canto repertoire, American opera star Joyce DiDonato is not one to rest on her laurels. For her latest musical adventure, the two-time Grammy Award winner has joined extraordinary musicians from the worlds of jazz and tango to create Songplay, an exploration of the universal language of music. Led by pianist and arranger Craig Terry, the band includes jazz legends Chuck Israels (bass) and Jimmy Madison (drums), as well as young international sensations Lautaro Greco (bandoneón) and Charlie Porter (trumpet). In keeping with DiDonato’s recent recordings, the Grammy Award–winning Joyce & Tony: Live from Wigmore Hall and Grammy Award nominee In War and Peace, Songplay is an all-encompassing celebration of music, in which there are no boundaries or rules.
