ROSAS
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Founding Choreographer
July 8-16, 2014
8 performances, Gerald W. Lynch Theater
July 8 and 9, 8 pm: Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich (1982)
July 11 and 12, 8 pm: Rosas danst Rosas (1983)
July 13 and 14, 8 pm: Elena’s Aria (1984)
July 15 and 16, 8 pm: Bartók/Mikrokosmos (1987)
One of the leading figures in contemporary dance, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker revisits four of her earliest, seminal works when she and members of Rosas, the Brussels-based company she formed 30 years ago, appear at Lincoln Center Festival 2014. Ms. De Keersmaeker has said the four works represent her learning how to make dance, “They share the same search for a formal language where the structure generates the emotion.” The works will be performed chronologically starting with Fase (1982) on July 8 and 9; Rosas danst Rosas (1983) on July 11 and 12; Elena’s Aria (1984), July 13 and 14; and Bartók/Mikrokosmos (1987), July 15 and 16. De Keersmaeker is scheduled to dance in the company’s two earliest works: Fase and Elena’s Aria. Bartók/Mikrokosmos is danced to live music performed by members of Ictus Ensemble
After studying dance at Mudra, Maurice Béjart’s school in Brussels, and at the Dance Department of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s career was launched with Fase, four movements to the music of Steve Reich, the work she created in 1982 on herself and another female dancer. She founded her company Rosas in 1983. The company borrowed its name from the work Rosas danst Rosas, created the same year. These first two productions were international breakthroughs for the choreographer and marked Belgium’s emergence as a force on the international dance scene. From 1992 until 2007, De Keersmaeker was resident choreographer at Brussels’ Théâtre de la Monnaie / Muntschouwburg. In 1995 Rosas and La Monnaie / De Munt jointly started the international educational project P.A.R.T.S., Performing Arts Research and Training Studios, directed by De Keersmaeker. Today, the dance school offers a four-year multi-disciplinary curriculum and hosts talented students from all over the world.
From the start, De Keersmaeker set the tone of Rosas’ work with her characteristic dance vocabulary and tightly structured choreography. The foundations of her aesthetic are a deep connection to music—she has used the structure of a score as a tool to create choreography—and a tension between austere formalism and expressiveness. She has selected composers from various historical periods for her work: Monteverdi, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Bartók, Webern, and Ligeti, but also Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Joan Baez, and traditional Indian music. De Keersmaeker has collaborated with living composers such as George Benjamin, Toshio Hosokawa, and Thierry De Mey. She has been particularly drawn to the music of Steve Reich, creating a number of acclaimed works over the years—Fase (1983), Drumming (1998), and Rain (2001). She has directed opera, including Bluebeard’s Castle (1998) and Hanjo (2004).
De Keersmaeker has also left the confines of pure dance and has ventured into dance-theater, as well as collaborations with theater and visual artists, and other choreographers, creating a range of works, many multidisciplinary, among these are: Zeitung (2008) created in collaboration with Alain Franco; En Atendant (2010) with Michel François and Cesena (2011) with Ann Veronica Janssens and Björn Schmelzer. The latter two companion works, originally created for the Avignon Festival, had their U.S. premieres at BAM this past October. De Keersmaeker’s most recent work, Partita 2 (2013), is a duet with dancer/choreographer Boris Charmatz to Bach’s Partita No. 2; and Vortex Temporum (2013), to music of Gérard Grisey.
In A Choreographer’s Score, a two-volume monograph published by Rosas and Mercatorfonds (May 2012/July 2013), De Keersmaeker offers wide-ranging insights into the making of the four early works to be performed at Lincoln Center Festival, as well as into the creation of En Atendant and Cesena.
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s dance, film and theater work has been recognized with numerous international awards over the years. She received Bessie Awards for Rosas danst Rosas (1987) and for Sustained Achievement (1999 Lincoln Center Festival performances of Fase). In 2011, she received the American Dance Festival Award for her lifetime body of work. She has been honored by the Belgian Flemish government and in 2008 was named a Commander of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2013, Tanz, Germany’s leading dance magazine, named her Dancer of the Year.
The Festival 2014 engagement marks a return to Lincoln Center for Rosas. The company danced Fase, four movements to the music of Steve Reich at Lincoln Center Festival in 1999 and Mozart / Concert Arias. Un moto di gioia (1992) was part of Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival in 2004.
