Britten: Curlew River, Op. 71

A co-commission and co-production between the Barbican Centre, London, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts,Carolina Performing Arts and CAL Performances Berkeley.

In this highly acclaimed 2013 production of Benjamin Britten’s church oratorio Curlew River, tenor Ian Bostridge delivers a devastating portrayal of a Madwoman tortured by the loss of her child in a production directed by Netia Jones in her New York debut. Britten was inspired by the austere and ritualized drama of Japanese Noh theater, and the work is a strange and haunting encounter between a Japanese aesthetic and a medieval mystery play set in the context of East Suffolk, shot through with mysterious, exotic music of exquisite refinement. Divided in two by the stage—a long, raised platform mimicking the titular river—the audience experiences the Madwoman’s profound isolation from inside visual artist and director Netia Jones’s haunting atmosphere of contrasts. Of its world premiere performance at the Barbican in 2013, London’s Guardian declared that Bostridge’s “performance will rank among the finest ever in this role.” Jones’s beautifully abstract minimalist staging and haunting projections distill the work to its essential elements—the aesthetic is a Japanese one of contrast: black and white; sound and silence; darkness and light; grief and enlightenment.
