Adam Pendleton: My Education - A Portrait of David Hilliard
Jason Moran, jazz pianist
Adam Pendleton is a conceptual artist who works in the mediums of painting, publishing, collage, video, and performance. His work centers on an engagement with language, in both the figurative and literal senses. The subject of his film being shown, David Hilliard, was a founding member and former chief of staff of the Black Panther Party. The film focuses on the fatal gun battle between police, Black Panthers, and black youth in Oakland, CA two days after Martin Luther King’s assassination, as witnessed and recalled by Hilliard. Jason Moran, Artistic Director of Jazz at John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Blue Note Records recording artist, is a risk-taker and jazz innovator. He has been described as “the future of jazz,” and Rolling Stone calls him “the most provocative thinker in current jazz.” His work has been influenced by edgy 20th century painters including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Robert Rauschenberg, and he also has ongoing collaborations in the visual art world, with both MoMA and the Whitney Museum including his music in their collections.David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, Frieda and Roy Furman Stage (Broadway bet. 62nd & 63rd St.)

Pee-wee’s Big Adventure
In anticipation of Lincoln Center Festival 2015’s presentation of the New York premiere of Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton in Avery Fisher Hall from Monday, July 6 to Sunday, July 12, Lincoln Center will screen Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. For this riotously funny movie, two of the most original talents in recent decades—Pee-wee Herman and director Tim Burton—teamed up on what was to be their major breakthrough about Pee-wee's cross-country search for his stolen bike. As Pee-wee encounters bikers, cowboys, crooks, a phantom trucker, and passes through the Alamo and Warner Bros. Studios, any resistance is futile: unstoppable laughter always follows.

Meet the Artist Saturdays
Movement of the People Dance Company in Alma Liberada/Liberated Soul
In partnership with Casita Maria
Founded in 2005 by Joya Powell, Movement of the People Dance Company (MOPDC) is dedicated to connecting cultures through dance, composing socially conscious choreography, exploring the connections and nuances of traditional world dances, and finding ways for underserved communities to empower themselves through the art of dance. Join MOPDC in a fun filled Saturday including a Free Samba Afro Dance Workshop for all ages, MOPDC performance and Talk Back with MOPDC company members. MOPDC will celebrating Brazilian culture, performing excerpts from repertoire pieces: Beleza Bahia, Natureza Viva! & Solte Sua Samba / Beautiful Bahia, Nature Lives! & Release Your Samba. This trio of choreography represents traditional community building dances of Brazil, including: dances of the Orixás, Samba Afro / Samba de Roda, and Pagode / Samba. These colorful pieces express the Afro-Brazilian experience through folkloric and interpretive choreography.

Film Screening
Batman
In anticipation of Lincoln Center Festival 2015’s presentation of the New York premiere of Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton in Avery Fisher Hall from Monday, July 6 to Sunday, July 12, Lincoln Center will screen Batman. Directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as Batman, this film captures Gotham City's sinister atmosphere and Batman's brooding nature. Jack Nicholson and Kim Basinger also star. Featuring songs by Prince and the Danny Elfman score, Batman won the 1990 Oscar® for Best Art Direction/Set Decoration.

Rashid Johnson: The New Black Yoga
Melvin Van Peebles with Menage a Trio

Much of the work by New York-based artist Rashid Johnson—a David C. Driskell Prize-winner—explores the contradictions of black identity, in particular, challenging stereotypical ways of thinking about the black experience. Following a conversation moderated by noted film producer Warrington Hudlin, Johnson’s film The New Black Yoga will be shown on the Atrium’s 42-foot wide media screen. The short film depicts a young group of black men practicing yoga in an idyllic setting, and challenges the contradictions that come to mind. Filmmaker, Broadway producer, composer, author, and recording artist Melvin Van Peebles will perform as well as be part of the moderated discussion.

Internationally renowned master storyteller Charlotte Blake Alston captivates audiences of all ages with her wide repertoire of stories and songs from African and African-American oral traditions. Bixiga 70
The recording studio Traquitana at number 70 Rua 13 de Maio in São Paolo, Brazil, is located in the city’s Bixiga neighborhood, a melting pot of Italian, African, and South American cultures. One of the best places in the city to listen to music, it’s also the birthplace of one of the hottest groups spearheading the Brazilian Afro music scene, Bixiga 70. The 10-piece band plays a genre-spanning fusion of Afro-beat, Guinean malinké, Brazilian candomblé, samba, and cumbia and the music on its three top selling CDs offer an irresistible mix of rhythms.

Robin Rhode: Selected Animations

Raised in South Africa and now living in Berlin, the multi-disciplinary artist Robin Rhode uses visual languages that range from photography and performance to drawing and sculpture. The growing influence of pop culture and colorful street murals in his native Johannesburg inspired a kind of street-based aesthetic in his work, which displays a masterful skill for using high and low art forms to showcase a wide variety of historical and contemporary references. Rhode was recently commissioned by Lincoln Center’s Vera List Art project to create a limited edition photograph entitled Wall of Water (2015). He’ll talk about his creations with PERFORMA founder and moderator Goldberg in an evening that includes a screening of his selected animations and musical performance by Haitian electronic music artist Val Jeanty.

StudioNYCHA showcases the artistry of New York City residents. This program will feature incredible emerging performers, aged six through senior, who each participated in the recent StudioNYCHA Talent Show. Song, dance, and spirit will be on display as StudioNYCHA highlights the top placing performers from the Talent competition.
